Passaic is a town located in Passaic County, One of New Jersey's counties, north of Newark. It has a total population of 67,861 (according to the United States 2000 census). It is served by two separate newspapers: The Star Ledger and The Record. It was originally a settlement established in 1679 by the Dutch, located along the Passaic River, and it was originally called Acquackanonk. In the 1800's industrial growth started, and Passaic turned into a metalworking and textile center. On March 10, 1869 Passaic was established, and on March 21, 1871 it was formed into an independent village. Finally on April 2, 1873 Passaic was established as a city. In 1926 there was a famous strike that involved the right of free assembly, against the reductions of wages.

Passaic is known as the birthplace of television because in 1931 an experimental television station, W2XCD , started transmitting through DeForest Radio Corp. It was the first to be transmitted to the home and to show a featured film. In 1937 Allen B. DuMont, who was formerly DeForest's engineer, opened Dumont Laboratories which was Television manufacturing company. Later in 1946, Dumont started the DuMont Television Network, which was the very first commercial television network in the world.
